Nicky, one of Llanelli Food Assembly’s regular members, tried two GreenScents products, after taking aways samples from our February Taster Evenings. This is what Nicky said, when asked for her feedback:
Hi John — Having taken your samples of Laundry Liquid and Loo Cleaner, here is what I found. Laundry Liquid is great, used it once for woollens and once for bedding. There is a slight pleasant odour left on the fabric, which is very soft as if softener had been used (I rarely use proprietary softeners and didn’t this time), especially on the woollens. Would like to order a larger bottle, please. Loo Cleaner – used it twice to date, nice pleasant minty fresh smell and does as expected. Happy to re-order a bigger bottle.
GreenScents offer a total of 36 products—including polish, floor soap, loo cleaner, multi-surface spray, washing up liquid—most of which I will be stocking on their behalf, albeit in small numbers to begin with, while we see what sells well.
Get in quick if you want to be amongst the first to try them: most items are available in limited numbers of between 2 to 4 items—until we restock.
Note: If you would like to order 5L bottles, they are available but will usually arrive at the next-following assembly, rather than the immediately-upcoming assembly (i.e. in two Monday’s time), because they will be delivered to order.
Why are we offering non-food produce at a Food Assembly?
Non-food artisan produce has always been a part of the vision and expression of Food Assembly: “Local non-food items: soaps, candles, oils, skin care, cosmetics and beauty products, kitchen items, gardening items, flowers, plants, gifts.”
Dulverton isn’t what you’d normally call “local”…
Not especially local, no. On average, our current range of other producers come from within a 10-mile radius, so perhaps a bit of latitude is in order. In fact, Food Assembly place a 150-mile limit on their definition of “local.” It’s about perspective and finding a balance.
What impressed me about GreenScents?
When Peter Hawkes got in touch with me, I immediately appreciated the ethos of GreenScents, together with the natural approach of their produce. I showed it to Sarah, who is a qualified biochemist with a strong understanding of environmental toxins and she recommended it strongly.
How does it compare to other detergents?
Ethical Consumer magazine (March 2017), ranked 25 different companies for their detergents. The survey included household names such as Proctor & Gamble, Ecover and Faith in Nature. Each company was ranked for factors relating to: Environment (5), Animals (3), People (5), Politics (4), plus Ethos and Sustainability.
Greenscents came top of their survey. They scored 16.5 out of a possible 20. They were the only company gaining full marks for their company Ethos and Product Sustainability. (Unilever ranked last with 3.5 / 20. Proctor & Gamble second last, 4.5 / 20. Ecover ranked 11.5 / 20.)

How do Food Assemblies work?
The Food Assembly Online Market works on a Click-&-Collect basis. Ordering takes place through our Online Click-&-Collect Market. This is an easy-to-use online shop. There is also a smartphone app.
Our shop lists available produce, which Members can order. Producers receive the orders via the Internet. Then, once-a-week they deliver the orders. Their produce is delivered to a local venue in the heart of Llanelli. Members arrive to collect their produce and chat to producers. Find out more
What’s special about Food Assembly?
We connect local food producers with local people at a local venue. Members browse a range of locally-produced Welsh food. They learn about the people producing their food. Most of our producers are family farms or businesses.
At the Assembly, members meet the food producers. Producers are paid after the orders are collected. As all producers and the Assembly host are local, 90% of what you spend remains in the local economy. (This compares to supermarkets, where 25-30% typically remains local).
Can anyone join in?
Browsing and ordering requires a Food Assembly account. This is a simple signing-up process. It’s free and without obligation to order anything. A smartphone app allows you to do everything from your mobile!
Participation as a food producer requires a process of registration and vetting by Food Assembly. We ensure producers adhere to standards. And that they are local the Assembly. (Maximum distance 150 miles. Our average is about 12 miles!).
How did it start?
Food Assembly is a Europe-wide initiative. It started in France and now exists in many European countries. We believe Food Assembly provides an important alternative to mainstream food shopping. It it helping local food producers succeed. It is providing a more sustainable form of food shopping. We believe it provides a way to: Shop Fairer and to Eat Better. And, when you do those two things, to Feel Better!
